    • When and how to adjust Phase I retainers to both facilitate the unimpeded eruption of the permanent teeth and minimize extra-care visits.
    • When and how to determine if a patient needs Phase II treatment, and how to communicate this to the patient and parent(s).
    • How to manage indefinite retention once all the permanent teeth have erupted for a patient who does not need a second phase of treatment.
    • The degree to which Phase I arch development simplifies a second phase of orthodontic treatment in the event that additional treatment is indicated.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

The primary educational objectives of this course are to:

  • Explain, in detail, the proper technique for removing full braces on patients in the mixed dentition, including:
    • Preparing the patient for the visit.
    • Removal of the braces from loose primary teeth and teeth with stainless steel crowns.
    • Adhesive removal (including bite ramps & turbos) and esthetic recontouring.
  • Describe the proper way to conduct a Debond Conference to educate the parent(s) on what was accomplished during treatment, as well as discuss the retention process and possible need for a second phase of treatment in the future.
  • Review what information should be sent to the parent(s) and PCD after Phase I treatment is complete.
  • Review the retainer fabrication process, including:
    • Developing an intra-office workflow for in-house retainer fabrication.
    • What material to use and how to design the retainers to maximize efficacy, comfort, fit, compliance, durability, and adjustability.
    • How to account for challenging clinical situations (i.e. ectopic teeth, loose primary teeth).
  • Demonstrate how to manage the Phase I retention process to maximize efficiency and efficacy, including:
    • The frequency and duration of retainer wear.
    • The frequency and duration of Retainer Check appointments.
    • The procedure(s) to perform at each Retainer Check visit.
  • Explain how to determine if/when a patient is ready for Phase II and the scripting to use when discussing this with patients and parents.
  • Review the steps to take when a second phase of treatment is not necessary.
  • Present numerous patient cases to demonstrate that Phase I archwire expansion:
    • Is stable.
    • Minimizes the need for additional treatment.
    • Simplifies additional treatment in the event that it is necessary.
